ABOUT LEIPZIG

Leipzig, Germany is the second largest city in the federal state of Saxony, Germany and home to the oldest trade fair town of the world. In 2009, Leipzig was ranked 35th in the world out of 256 cities for cultural, economic, and social innovation. The city is an ideal place for walks and cycle tours. In the southern part of the city, there is a recreational area at Lake Cospudan with a track that leads to a landscape park, a natural adventure stretch, bathing beaches, restaurants, cafés, and a lakeside theater. A new highlight in the southern tip of the city is BELANTIS theme park, the only one of its kind in Germany. The 60,000 square meters of water and 4 kilometer circular walk will take visitors on a journey through time.

Other green oases in Leipzig include the Botanical Gardens with a butterfly house with about 200 different species, and Leipzig Zoo. Only a few minutes from the city centre, Leipzig Zoo is transforming into a "Zoo of the Future": keeping animals in near-natural environments while providing ways for its visitors to experience the animals' natural behaviour with all senses are key motives in the Zoo's active change-over.

The city is historic, scenic, and a cultural attraction for visitors from all walks of life. Leipzig's Market Square is an attractive backdrop for open-air events in the summer. A host of restaurants and bars, each with their own unique atmosphere, contribute to a quickening of the city's cultural pulse during open-air events and concerts like the "Classic Open".

Head south from the city centre and you're bound to find some place just to your liking. Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse offers an attractive array of shops, as well as more than 30 restaurants and bars, including some most popular with the in-crowd. The number of restaurants, pubs and cafés has grown substantially in recent years. Today, Leipzig can offer its visitors a wide range of international cuisine as well as events restaurants of almost all kinds, combining the serving of food with exhibitions, music and dance, a unique atmosphere or interior design, or live performances.
